Azerbaijan says 2,783 of its soldiers were killed in the Karabakh conflict

On Thursday, Azerbaijan said that during its confrontation with ethnic Armenian forces over the Nagorno-Karabakh enclave, 2,783 of its soldiers were killed and that more than 100 of its troops were still missing.

Until now, in the conflict that erupted on Sept. 27 and came to a halt on Nov. 10 when a Russian-brokered peace agreement ushered in a ceasefire, Azerbaijan had not reported any of its military casualties.

Nagorno-Karabakh swaths of territory previously controlled by ethnic Armenians were handed over to Azerbaijan, whose forces had captured territory, including areas that had been lost to Baku in the early 1990s war.

Armenia has not yet disclosed its military’s final death toll, but an official from the Ministry of Health reported on Nov. 14 that 2,317 soldiers had been killed.
