According to a woman, who claims she may have an allergy to nail products, she finds it difficult to even use her hands. Lisa Dewey, 36, claimed she had been getting her nails done without any problems for years. However, her nails developed an infection and began ripping away from her nail beds after she had a full set of gel polish applied in February.

She was given an antibiotic and steroid cream after doctors initially diagnosed the symptoms as coming from a bacterial infection. She chose to get acrylic nails in April after the symptoms of infection seemed to disappear after taking the medications. Yet again, she noticed that her nails had gotten “very aggravated” as the symptoms had returned.

“I was concerned that I would lose my entire finger as my nail bed turned purple. The same thing transpired when I got them redone recently, this time using acrylics, she said.

She claimed she could ”barely” move her hands because the agony was so excruciating that her flesh felt like it was ”tearing away” from her fingers. According to Independent, she even had trouble holding a pen, doing up a seatbelt, washing up, and washing her daughter’s hair.

She may have acquired a nail product allergy, as is now thought.

A dermatologist’s analysis on the recent rise in allergic responses to acrylic and gel nails was cited by the BBC. Contact allergies have been linked to the methacrylate compounds used in acrylic and gel manicures.
