After several hours of delays, evacuation flights commenced on Monday evening, according to the US.

US President Joe Biden defended his choice to leave Afghanistan in a speech on Monday.

“I stand entirely behind my choice,” President Biden said. “I’ve learned the hard way after 20 years that withdrawing the US troops is never a good idea. We haven’t departed because of this.”

The Taliban’s quick conquest of Kabul drew criticism from the US administration of Joe Biden.
