The crowning of King Charles will involve over 5,000 members of the British armed services, together with soldiers from more than 30 Commonwealth nations, making it one of the biggest ceremonial military operations in recent memory.

On May 6, Charles will be crowned at Westminster Abbey in London in a ceremony rich with pomp and grandeur with history reaching back a thousand years.

Before military forces later conduct a flypast of more than 60 aircraft, gun salutes will sound out across the nation to mark the moment the monarch is crowned.

It will be a spectacular and worthy tribute, as evidenced by the parade on The Mall, the flypast over London, and cannon salutes around the nation, according to a statement released on Sunday by Defence Secretary Ben Wallace.

Less than eight months have passed since the coronation, which drew sizable crowds to London’s streets to watch the elaborate processions and festivities that commemorated Queen Elizabeth’s death after 70 years as monarch.

The coronation of her son Charles is expected to differ from Elizabeth’s in 1953 in a few ways, most notably in magnitude, which partly reflects modern society and the current economic crisis. The palace has been gradually revealing information about the event.

The coronation march and anthem were written by film composer Patrick Doyle and Andrew Lloyd Webber, respectively. According to Buckingham Palace, Charles was actively involved in the music program’s commissioning process.
