According to her lawyer, an American woman who developed uterine cancer after using L’Oreal USA’s chemical hair straightening products sued the company on Friday.

Jenny Mitchell, the woman who filed the civil lawsuit, stated that she had used the products for more than two decades before being diagnosed with uterine cancer, which forced her to have a full hysterectomy.

The lawsuit comes just days after the Journal of the National Cancer Institute published a study that found a link between the use of chemical hair straightening products and uterine cancer.

The study discovered that women who used the products more than four times per year were more than twice as likely as those who did not to develop uterine cancer.

Uterine cancer is relatively uncommon, but its prevalence is increasing in the United States, particularly among Black women.

“Black women have long been the victims of dangerous products specifically marketed to them,” said Ben Crump, Mitchell’s personal injury attorney, in a statement.

The civil suit filed on Friday seeks damages from the US branch of L’Oreal, the French cosmetics conglomerate, as well as other companies.

“We will almost certainly discover that Ms Mitchell’s tragic case is one of countless cases in which companies aggressively misled Black women in order to increase their profits,” Crump predicted.

L’Oreal did not respond immediately to the lawsuit.
