Residents of Shanghai, enraged by the brutal COVID-19 lockdown, can be heard screaming from their apartments in fresh social media videos. Several such videos have surfaced on Twitter, Instagram, and other platforms, showing people arguing with local police and threatening to sue.

As part of the country’s “zero COVID” policy, China’s largest metropolis has been placed under lockdown since April 5 to prevent the spread of the sickness. The city’s 26 million residents have been instructed to remain at home.

Dr. Eric Feigl-Ding, a well-known public health specialist located in the United States, shared several of these recordings from Shanghai in which he claims the tenants of the flats are speaking in “Shanghainese,” a local dialect. He believes the people will not be able to hold out for much longer, which could lead to a disaster.

“Yao ming le” and “yao si” are both idioms that imply “life and death,” but they also mean “asking for death” in Chinese. “The narrator finally hints that shit is going to hit the fan shortly if this continues,” Dr Feigl-Ding said in the Twitter thread.

In addition, Shanghainese is a regional dialect (not particularly effective for propaganda) – only 14 million of China’s 1.3 billion people speak it. “I only speak it because I was born there,” he explained in a subsequent tweet.

According to the health expert, China may be approaching a “tipping point” with Omicron’s BA.2 variety, which is driving the increase in cases in Shanghai.

On Sunday, over 25,000 locally transmitted COVID-19 infections were detected in China’s most populated metropolis. Locals expressed their dissatisfaction with the lack of food and basic supplies, and fear grew that other communities will soon be in the same condition.

Shanghai’s case counts are low in comparison to other cities across the world, but it is dealing with China’s worst COVID outbreak since the virus originated in the central city of Wuhan in 2019.

Shanghai’s streets are desolate, with only healthcare workers, volunteers, delivery staff, and those with special permission permitted to go out.
