Fresh COVID- On Thursday, there were 1,89,213 cases in the United Kingdom (UK), with a 53 percent increase in London and 332 deaths. The average mortality toll within four weeks following a positive test, on the other hand, fell below 100 per day for the first time since August, continuing a declining trend, according to the United Kingdom Health and Security Agency (UKHSA).

Experts say the declining data are due to an increase in cases of the Omicron type, which currently accounts for 93 percent of new infections, according to Sputnik.

On Wednesday, the number of positive tests reached 1,83,000, which was four to five times the daily norms recorded in the autumn. In addition, the number of Omicron variant cases in the UK has reached 2,29,666, with 19,544 additional cases reported on Thursday. Nonetheless, the newly infected people had considerably fewer symptoms than those who had the Delta variant, according to UKSHA.

However, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government has yet to issue strong regulations requiring the use of face masks in public venues and public transportation.

Is this the Omicron effect in action?

The Omicron strain of COVID-19 is causing worry due to the sharp increase in cases. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) indicated on Thursday that preliminary data indicating the severity of Omicron infection is still too early to be certain.

The viral sickness claimed the lives of 57 people in the United Kingdom on Wednesday. The threat from the Omicron variety might be decreased “from a hurricane to a very severe storm,” according to Professor Andrew Hayward of the UK government’s Nervtag Advisory Body, who noted the spike in COVID-19 infections.

“Omicron appears to result in less severe disease for individuals infected with it,” UKHSA said in an earlier study, citing preliminary results on the novel variety.

Nonetheless, the CDC confirmed that the new strain is more contagious. It’s also possible that a large number of people will need hospital treatment in the coming weeks. In addition, those who had previously had COVID-19 had greater Omicron infections, according to the study.

The findings were in line with two other studies done by Imperial College London and the University of Edinburgh, according to The Telegraph.
