Ottawa : As truckers continued to occupy Ottawa with similar demands, Saskatchewan announced the relaxation of all Covid requirements on Tuesday, including the wearing of masks and proof of vaccination for indoor meals.

Despite opposition from doctors and nurses, Alberta was anticipated to follow suit soon, and Quebec stated that limits will be eased even further.

The majority of Saskatchewan’s provisions, which were implemented in September as the Delta variation of COVID-19 spread across the country, will be phased out at midnight on Sunday.

However, indoor masking requirements and quarantines for anyone who tests positive will be in effect until the end of the month.

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe said at a press conference that “this policy has run its course.”

The premier noted that more than 80% of Saskatchewan residents had received two Covid vaccine jabs, with about half receiving a booster, and that it was now time to treat Covid as endemic, citing data from across the country.

Premier Jason Kenney of Alberta has proposed that pandemic restrictions in his province be lifted in stages. This week, he’ll give further information.

Meanwhile, Quebec Premier Francois Legault announced on Tuesday that Covid restrictions in his province will be lifted by the middle of March.

“We’ll have to get used to being infected. There may be a sixth wave in the future, but for the time being, Covid will suffice.” Legault provided evidence in the form of a decrease in Covid hospitalizations.

Moe, who contracted Covid last month, has backed a convoy of truckers who gathered on Ottawa to demand an end to vaccine mandates for cross-border travel.

The federal government sets vaccine mandates for travellers, although provincial governments are responsible for the majority of Covid measures.

In a video speech last week, he said it was time for Canadians to reclaim their independence and return to “normalcy.”
