Governor Kathy Hochul of New York announced on Friday that her state has identified five cases of the COVID-19 Omicron strain, bringing the total number of cases in the US to eight.

So far, eight cases of the Omicron variant have been reported in the United States, with at least one of them, in Minnesota, including someone who had no recent international travel history, suggesting that the strain is already spreading in the country.

The new potentially more contagious B.1.1.529 variation was initially reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) on November 24, and the global agency has labelled it as a “Variant of Concern,” dubbed “Omicron.”

Since the discovery of the mutation, some countries have put travel restrictions on countries in southern Africa.
