As the country reported another 3,383 cases of Covid-19, a British government advisory scientist warned that the country could be in the early stages of a third wave. Although new cases were “relatively low,” Professor Ravi Gupta of the University of Cambridge said the India-related variant had fueled “exponential growth,” according to the Xinhua news agency.

“Of course, the number of cases is relatively low at the moment — all waves begin with a small number of cases that grumble in the background and then explode,” he told the BBC.

However, he predicted that this wave would take longer to emerge than previous ones due to the pace of vaccine rollout in the United Kingdom.

Gupta, a member of the government’s New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group, said, “There may be a false sense of security for some time, and that is our concern” (Nervtag).

He believes that the June 21 deadline for removing coronavirus restrictions in England should be postponed.

“I believe the costs and benefits of getting it wrong are heavily in favour of delaying, so I believe that’s the key.”

According to official figures released Monday, another 3,383 people in the United Kingdom have tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases to 4,487,339 in the country.

A coronavirus-related death was also reported in the country. In total, 127,782 people have died as a result of the coronavirus in the United Kingdom. Only people who died within 28 days of receiving a positive test are included in these statistics.

Meanwhile, the number of people infected with the Covid-19 variant, which was first discovered in India, has nearly doubled in a week in England, raising fears that the British government’s lockdown plan will be jeopardised.

Pubs, bars, and restaurants in England were allowed to reopen indoors beginning May 17, and indoor entertainment, such as cinemas, museums, and children’s play areas, was reinstated.

The ban on foreign travel has also been lifted, allowing people to travel to a number of countries on the green list without having to quarantine when they return.

On June 21, all legal restrictions on social contact are expected to be lifted under the British government’s plan. A final decision on the planned easing of lockdown is expected to be made on June 14.

According to the most recent official figures, more than 39.3 million people, or roughly three-quarters of the adult population in the United Kingdom, have received their first coronavirus vaccine.

Experts have warned that coronavirus could evolve for years and that current vaccines will eventually fail to protect against transmission, infection, or disease caused by newer variants.
