A senior official said on Tuesday that the United States is concerned about Beijing’s pattern of continuing attempts to intimidate its neighbours.”We are closely monitoring the situation. We note the ongoing talks between the governments of India and China, and we continue to support direct dialogue and a peaceful resolution of those border disputes,” reporters were told by State Department spokesman Ned Price at his daily news conference.

Since early May last year, Indian and Chinese soldiers have been locked in a bitter border standoff in eastern Ladakh. India and China agreed to push for early disengagement of troops in the ninth round of military talks last month and resolved to continue “effective efforts” to stabilise and control the situation in eastern Ladakh.

“In response to questions, Price said, “We are concerned about the pattern of ongoing attempts by Beijing to intimidate its neighbours. As always, we will stand with friends, we will stand with partners, we will stand with allies in the Indo-Pacific, in this case, to advance our shared prosperity, security, and values.

The Speaker also said that the United States regularly engages with the Indian government in the shared commitment of the two countries to democratic values.

“What I can say – and this applies not only to India but to every partner of ours across the board – we are committed to supporting democratic values, including a free and open civil society and the strong rule of law,” Price said.

“Asked if the ongoing agitation of farmers and human rights issues came up during the recent talks with their Indian counterparts by the top officials of the Biden Administration, he said, “We regularly engage with the Government of India… on our shared commitment to democratic values. We believe it’s the bedrock of the relationship between the US and India. In fact, it is in keeping, as you know, with the democratic values of India itself, its pluralistic values, and its history of tolerance.
