Twitter Reacts to London Theatre's Unisex Toilets as "Regressive"

Users on social media are criticizing a London theatre for combining the ladies’ and gents’ bathrooms. The Playhouse Theatre is the latest to open a gender-inclusive public restroom, continuing the trend of providing a gender-inclusive space for transgender people or anyone who does not fit into the gender binary.
People paid up to £250 for tickets to see Eddie Redmayne and Jessie Buckley in Cabaret at the Playhouse. They took to Twitter to express their rage.

“I avoid public restrooms like the plague because they’re disgusting. But if I have to use one, I don’t want to share it with strangers,” user Jen remarked.
Another commenter stated that forcing women to use men’s facilities “is not bringing the globe ahead, it’s retrograde.”

The tweets came in reaction to a dispute between journalists and broadcasters Julia Hartley-Brewer and Matthew Wright on the British television show This Morning, which airs on ITV.

While Ms. Hartley-Brewer referred to unisex toilets as “woke nonsense,” Mr. Wright stated that they are “exactly like your family bathroom at home.”

“I have a 15-year-old daughter, and I want her to know that when she goes to the bathroom, she’s in a secure environment,” Ms. Hartley-Brewer explained.
“I don’t know about Julia, but I have a gender-neutral toilet at home,” Mr. Wright said. Men and women use it freely, and I’ve taken a problem with Julia telling me what men think. I don’t have any issues.”

One Twitter user agreed with him, writing, “I couldn’t care less whether they’re gender-neutral toilets as long as we all have somewhere to pee.” I believe it is critical to make facilities available to everyone, regardless of gender identification.”

In the meanwhile, transgender activist Felix Fern told talkRADIO, “I’m not sure what the problem is.” People don’t mind having single-sex restrooms on trains and at home.”
