The women’s snowboard slopestyle competition was intended to be a duel between American Jamie Anderson, who was vying for her third consecutive gold medal in the event, and reigning world champion Zoi Sadowski-Synnott of New Zealand. Instead, it was a fight between Sadowski-Synnott and another American.

Julia Marino of Team USA lead the competition, with all of the sport’s great players executing their final runs. Anderson’s third and final run was cut short after the two-time winner fell on the first of three jumps. Sadowski-Synnott, 20, was the final participant to complete the race.

But Sadowski-Synnott, who was second going into her last run, put down a 92.88 to win the gold. Marino had to settle for silver.

Tess Coady of Australia came in third place.
Marino dominated her second run, finishing with a score of 87.68 that featured two 900s and a 1080. The silver medal was America’s first in Beijing.

The 24-year-old from Westport, Connecticut, was competing in her second Olympics after finishing 11th in Pyeongchang.

Sadowski-gold Synnott’s medal was New Zealand’s first in Winter Olympics history.
Anderson won silver in large air four years ago, while Sadowski Synnott, then 16, received bronze. The Austrian gold medallist from Pyeongchang, Anna Gasser, will also be in Beijing.

Anderson would have tied a record for the most straight gold medals in the same individual event at the Winter Olympics. Although the accomplishment has been done multiple times, speedskater Bonnie Blair is the only American to have ever won three consecutive gold medals in the same race.
