The key ally and main coalition partner Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM) dealt a massive blow to Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government after striking a deal with the opposition Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). “The MQM and the united opposition have reached an agreement. As of now, the Imran Khan government has lost its majority in Pakistan’s lower house of Parliament due to a late-night development days before the no-confidence motion or no-trust vote against Imran Khan.

Pakistan’s joint opposition now has 177 MNAs after the ruling coalition partner MQM-P decided to split with the Imran Khan-led government, which now has 164 MNAs (Members of National Assembly).

Notably, Pakistan’s joint opposition requires the support of 172 MNAs in order for the no-confidence motion against the Prime Minister to be successful.

The Pakistani General Assembly has 342 members in total, with 172 constituting a majority. The PTI-led coalition was formed with the support of 179 members, but now that MQM-P has left the party, the PTI is standing with 164 members, while the Opposition has 177 members in the national assembly and does not require the support of disgruntled PTI MNAs.

Meanwhile, after Imran Khan claimed that some people are attempting to destabilise his government with the help of foreign funds, federal minister Asad Umar stated that the Prime Minister is prepared to show a letter to Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial to back up his claims.

During his rally, Imran Khan stated, “Foreign money is being used to try to change the government in Pakistan. Our people are being exploited. Most of the time unintentionally, but some people are using money against us. We are aware of the sources of the pressure being applied to us. We have been threatened in writing, but we will not compromise on matters of national importance.”

The MQM-P decided to back the opposition after both parties agreed to a draught prepared by Administrator Karachi Murtaza Wahab. According to sources, the signatories also include Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Pakistan People’s Party Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, as well as the leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Shahbaz Sharif.
