On Saturday, US President Joe Biden claimed he had told Russian President Vladimir Putin that if Russia invaded Ukraine, it would pay a “terrible price” and face disastrous economic consequences.

In the event of a Russian invasion, Biden told reporters that sending ground combat troops to Ukraine was “never on the table,” however the US and NATO would be obligated to reinforce defences on NATO’s eastern flank.

“I made it very clear to President Putin… that if he presses on Ukraine, the economic implications for his economy will be awful, devastating,” he said.

Biden, who spoke with Putin over the phone for two hours last week, said he made it clear to the Russian leader that an incursion into Ukraine would damage Russia’s global standing “markedly.”
