Mangeshkar began traditional Indian music lessons with her father at the age of five. Deenanath Mangeshkar, her father, was a well-known classical vocalist and theatre performer. His daughter began her career as a singer in his musical productions.
Mangeshkar made her public debut at the age of nine and recorded her first song at the age of thirteen. Her father died a month after she recorded her debut song. Mangeshkar began working in the Indian film business after being left to maintain four younger siblings and her mother. Music directors first disregarded her because her voice was too thin and harsh.
