The United States ladies won gold and silver in the first-ever Olympic women’s monobob event, with Kaillie Humphries taking gold and Elana Meyers Taylor taking silver.
The pair made history by becoming the first woman to win a bobsled medal in four consecutive Olympics. Christine de Bruin of Canada took bronze.
Humphries won the race, leading by 1.54 seconds at the completion of the fourth run. Meyers Taylor, who had placed fourth after her first two races, gained ground in the third and fourth runs to finish ahead of de Bruin in 4:20:81. Meyers Taylor, who missed the entire season to give birth to her baby, Nico, exclaimed, “We did it!” as she crossed the finish line.
Humphries appeared to be running away with the competition towards the end of the third run, expanding her lead by 1.55 seconds. Meyers Taylor made the greatest run of the tournament thus far, climbing to the third position (just 0.18 seconds out of reach of second place).
Humphries took a dominating lead of 1.04 seconds over de Bruin at the completion of the first two heats on Monday. Her first two heats were completed in 2:09:10.
In December 2021, the three-time Olympic medalist and five-time world champion will be issued an American passport. She left Canada for the United States following a contentious split with Bobsleigh Canada, where she accused her head coach of psychological and emotional assault. She was a member of Bobsleigh Canada for 16 years, representing Canada in three Olympic Games (Vancouver, Sochi, and Pyeongchang) and winning two gold medals and one bronze medal in two-woman bobsled events.
With her gold medal, she became the first American to win a gold medal for both the United States and Canada at the Winter Olympics.
Meyers Taylor, the silver medallist from the United States, too had a difficult voyage to Beijing. Meyers Taylor, who was named Team USA’s flag bearer for the opening ceremony, tested positive for COVID-19 shortly after arriving in Beijing. She isolated for a week and produced two negative tests just before the start of training for the monobob and two-woman bobsled races.
Meyers Taylor earned silver medals in Sochi and Pyeongchang, as well as bronze in Vancouver.
