On Thursday, Harini Logan, a girl of Indian origin, won the Scripps National Spelling Bee in 2022. The Texas Class 8 student won the competition by correctly spelling more words in a magick, the Bee’s first since its founding in 1925. Ms. Logan defeated Vikram Raju, another Indian-origin student in Denver’s Class 7.
According to USA Today, the Spelling Bee had tense moments when both competitors refused to correctly spell two words in a row between Rounds 13 and 18. According to the report, this prompted the judges to select a spell-off – a 90-second round in which they must correctly spell as many words as possible.
Ms Logan correctly spelled 21 words while her opponent only managed 15, resulting in her victory.
According to the New York Times, Ms Logan, 14, experienced a heart-stopping moment when she was removed in the finals. However, the judges later decided that her definition of the word pullulation was acceptable.
According to the New York Times, this was Ms Logan’s fourth and final appearance in the Bee, and she described her victory as “surreal.”
After the three-hour competition, Vikram Raju, 12, stood with his head bowed. But when host LeVar Burton asked if he would come back to the Bee the following year, he replied emphatically, “Yes.”
Indian Americans have always controlled the competition, but last year, 14-year-old Zaila Avantgarde became the first African-American contender to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
The National Bee is a high-profile, good stamina test as much as a nerd spelling bee, and spellers prepare for it for months.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Bee was cancelled in 2020 for the first time since World War II. In 2019, however, there were eight co-champions, seven of which were Indian Americans.
