Kaillie Humphries holds a commanding lead in the opening round of the Beijing Olympics monobob competition.

Humphries is participating as an American citizen for the first time. It’s also the first time monobob, a one-woman bobsled, has been included in the Olympic program.
“I hope more women participate in the sport,” Humphries stated earlier in the Games. “I’m hoping to influence the sport’s future. I battled hard to give women a second medal chance, equal to men, and I will continue to strive for additional opportunities for women in sports. I don’t believe that women’s chances should be limited just because they are female. Not everyone feels the same way.”
The defending world monobob champion finished two runs Sunday in 2 minutes, 9.10 seconds, giving her a significant advantage of 1.04 seconds over second-place Christine de Bruin of Canada. De Bruin finished in 2:10.14.

Laura Nolte of Germany finished third in 2:10.32, while three-time Olympic winner Elana Meyers Taylor of the United States finished fourth in 2:10.42.

Barring a major blunder, it appears that four women are still in contention for the three medals. They’ll be chosen in Beijing on Monday morning, late Sunday night in the United States. Meyers Taylor is over a half-second faster than China’s fifth-placed Huai Mingming.
