Tennis great Novak Djokovic revealed on Wednesday that he did not immediately isolate after testing positive for Covid-19 last month, although he denied being aware of the infection while attending public events.
In a social media statement, he also apologized for an allegedly fake travel declaration, saying it was submitted on his behalf by a member of his support staff due to “human error.”
Since being held in Australia last week because of a visa and vaccine dispute, Djokovic has been immersed in controversy.
He landed in Melbourne last week and had his visa revoked for entering the country without a valid exemption for the country’s mandatory vaccine for all newcomers – but he won the legal battle on Monday, with a judge declaring that he should be allowed to stay.
However, questions have been raised about Djokovic’s actions, particularly his positive Covid diagnosis last month before arriving in Melbourne, and the public events he attended at the time.
“I want to address the ongoing misunderstanding about my December activities and attendance at events leading up to my positive PCR Covid test result,” he stated in a statement.
This is misinformation that must be corrected, particularly in the interest of assuaging community anxiety about my presence in Australia and addressing issues that are very damaging and disturbing to my family.
“I want to underline that I worked extremely hard to assure everyone’s safety as well as my compliance with testing duties.”
Djokovic stated that he went to a basketball game in Serbia’s capital, Belgrade, on December 14, and that several individuals tested positive thereafter. He had no symptoms at the time, but he was tested on December 16. According to the statement, on December 17, before receiving the formal result of his test, he did a fast test that came back negative and attended a youth tennis awards ceremony, after which he received the official positive result.
