In Chicago, an occurrence occurred that shocked everyone. An 8-year-old Chicago girl was strolling with her mother when she was shot in the head and murdered by a shooter who was also targeting someone else on the city’s Southwest Side.

Melissa Ortega of Chicago was identified as the victim by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office on Sunday. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, she was strolling down the street with her mother on Saturday afternoon when someone opened fire on a 26-year-old accused gang member who was exiting a local business. The police believe he was the intended victim.

The girl was pronounced dead at a hospital on Saturday. The man authorities suspect was the intended target was shot in the back and is in serious condition at the hospital. Authorities have no update on his condition on Sunday.

No one was arrested in connection with the incident on Sunday. Police Superintendent David Brown stated that the police “would not rest until the offenders” are apprehended.

“The horrific and senseless murder of Melissa, 8 years old, has shaken our community,” he tweeted on Sunday. “When a child’s life is cut short, there are no words of solace. There are no words to explain a family’s pain.”

The incident occurred during a period of increased killings in Chicago. With over 800 killings, last year was the city’s worst in a quarter-century.

According to the Chicago Teachers Union, Melissa attended Emiliano Zapata Academy, an elementary school in the city’s mainly Mexican Little Village area.

According to family members arranging an online fundraiser to pay for burial expenses in Mexico, the girl and her mother immigrated to Chicago from Mexico last year.
