The burial of famed comedian Umer Sharif in the Abdullah Shah Ghazi tomb is being planned by the Sindh government.

Sindh Information Minister Saeed Ghani said in a tweet that everyone was saddened by the death of Umer Sharif and that the Pakistan Peoples Party’s rally scheduled for Sunday had been cancelled (today). According to him, a son of the late comedian stated that Umer Sharif desired to be buried in the Abdullah Shah Ghazi cemetery, and the provincial government was making preparations for this.

 

Syed Aminul Haque, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Federal Pakistan’s Minister for Information Technology and Telecom, paid a visit to Umer Sharif’s home. He stated he was in contact with Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and that the comedian’s remains would be returned in 48 hours. He stated that he would like that his funeral be held at the state level.

Meanwhile, as soon as news of Umer Sharif’s death in Germany was broadcast on television, condolence messages began to flood social and mainstream media.

Umer Sharif, according to PPP leader Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, “raised the art of humour to new heights.” He prayed to God Almighty for patience and serenity for his family.

Imran Ismail, the Governor of Sindh, Murad Ali Shah, the Chief Minister of Sindh, and Karachi Administrator Murtaza Wahab all offered their condolences on the death of the great comedian.

Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, the MQM-convener, P’s offered his condolences and stated his party had declared a “day of sorrow” and ceased all organisational activity.

While paying extravagant honours to Umer Sharif, the Sindh chapter of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf has scheduled three days of mourning.

“A really good sharif [down to earth] man is gone,” writer Anwar Maqsood told Dawn. He was one of those people who used to make us smile. He shouldn’t have gone as far as he did.”

“Deeply heartbroken to learn about Umer Sharif sahib,” actor Humayun Saeed tweeted on Twitter. He was, without a question, the king of humour. May Allah have mercy on his soul. Umer bhai, we will miss you.”

Umer Sharif’s death, according to President Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi Ahmed Shah, is a major national loss. When the news of his death reached the council’s ruling body, it stunned everyone.

“Heartbroken to learn of the tragic news of our very own king of humour, Umer Sharif,” actor Faysal Qureshi said in a statement. In our industry, he was a rare find and a living legend. May Allah bestow the highest position in Jannah onto him. During this trying time, I’m praying for his family.”
