Wares Hasrat and Aslam Hejab, two Afghan journalists, have been detained by the Taliban, according to the Afghan media network. A senior correspondent at Iran International News confirmed that both journalists work for Ariana TV. “The Taliban didn’t specify why they detained them,” the correspondent stated on Twitter, “but a guest denounced the Taliban and their behaviour last night in one of Ariana TV’s programmes.”

The two reporters, Aslam Hejab and Waris Hasrat, were arrested by the Taliban on Monday, according to The Free Speech Hub, an organisation that supports open media in Afghanistan, in a statement.

Amnesty International termed the two journalists’ detention “unjustifiable” on Tuesday and demanded that the Islamic Emirate free them.

“The right to freedom of expression is under threat from such rising attacks on media freedom. They must be released promptly and unconditionally by the Taliban “According to a tweet from Amnesty International.

Andreas von Brandt, the EU ambassador to Afghanistan, reacted to the journalists’ detention as well.

“It’s still perplexing to me why some who claim to advocate for justice and better governance in Afghanistan don’t appreciate journalists trying to advance openness, governance, and justice,” he tweeted.
