In the latest attempt to punish Russian President Vladimir Putin for ordering the invasion of Ukraine, the White House has placed fresh sanctions on 50 Russian oligarchs and their families, including Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskovt.

As the Ukrainian people seek cover from bombardment, President Joe Biden said the penalties will target those who “fill their pockets with the Russian people’s money.” Members of the Russian elite, their families, and close connections will be barred from using the US financial system under the new sanctions.

“Today, I’m announcing that we’ll be adding hundreds of names to the list, including one of Russia’s wealthiest billionaires,” she said. “I’m prohibiting more than 50 Russian oligarchs, their families, and close friends from travelling to America,” Biden said at the start of his Cabinet meeting on Thursday at the White House.

According to him, the United States continues to impose harsh economic sanctions on Russian President Vladimir Putin and his entourage, restricting access to technology and the global banking system.

“It’s already made a significant impact.” And the goal was to have the greatest influence on Putin and Russia while causing the least amount of harm to ourselves, our allies, and friends around the world. “Our goal is to maintain the strongest coordinated economic impact campaign against Putin in history, and I believe we’re well on our way there,” Biden said.

In a statement, Secretary of State Antony Blinken named some of the wealthiest Russian elites close to Putin who have been targeted by the latest sanctions. Alisher Usmanov, Boris Arkady, and Igor Rotenberg, as well as their family members and entities, are involved.

Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesman, and Yevgeniy Prigozhin, a wealthy Russian businessman dubbed “Putin’s chef,” are among those named, according to NBC News.

“Because oil and gas sales account for such a big portion of Russia’s government budget, these steps will limit Russia’s ability to pay and sustain its military aggression.” “These regulations also harmonise US export controls with European Union controls in this area,” Blinken said.

“They addressed the incredible resolve and efforts taken by countries throughout the world to assist the Ukrainian government and people in the face of Putin’s attack on Ukraine. In a summary of the call, State Department Spokesperson Ned Price said: “They also discussed additional security, economic, and humanitarian support needs.”

“We don’t have a strategic interest in limiting the global supply of energy,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki remarked to reporters.

She claimed that the United States has been gradually eroding Russia’s position as a major energy provider. Of course, this includes shutting down or blocking the operation of Nord Stream 2.

According to him, the OSCE expert team would work impartially to uncover the facts and circumstances surrounding any OSCE commitments as well as violations and abuses of international human rights and humanitarian law by Russian forces.

“The expert mission will develop a report that will be shared with all OSCE member States and relevant accountability bodies, such as national, regional, and international courts and tribunals,” says the statement. “The US and our allies will hold Russia and its forces responsible for all human rights violations, violations of international humanitarian law, war crimes, and crimes against humanity committed in Ukraine,” Price added.

On Thursday, the United Kingdom imposed additional restrictions on two Russian oligarchs. More than two dozen prominent Russians will be sanctioned by the European Union, the EU stated this week.
