Following President Vladimir Putin’s attack on his country, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky called on British MPs on Tuesday to recognise Russia as a “terrorist country” and demanded stiffer sanctions to “ensure our skies are secure.”

Members of Parliament applauded the 44-year-old Ukrainian leader after he delivered a “historic” videolink address to the House of Commons.

“We need your assistance, as well as the assistance of the Western counties.” “We appreciate your assistance, and I thank you, Boris,” Zelensky added, addressing British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

“Please ratchet up the pressure on this country (Russia) by recognising it as a terrorist state.” Please ensure that the skies over Ukraine are safe. Please make sure you do what needs to be done and what your country’s grandeur requires. “Hope and glory to Ukraine and the United Kingdom,” he declared.

In an emotive speech, Zelensky quoted Winston Churchill, Britain’s wartime Prime Minister, threatening to fight Russian forces in the air, sea, and on the streets.

As Russian President Vladimir Putin’s soldiers launched an armed battle with Ukraine last month, Zelensky, a former comic and actor turned politician, has been at the centre of attention. When he spoke to the European Parliament last week via video link, he earned a standing ovation.

He has been in daily phone touch with Johnson, who has initiated a week of diplomacy to form a coalition to counter Russia’s actions in Ukraine. On Monday, he hosted Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte at Downing Street and subsequently spoke with US Vice President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to keep diplomatic and economic pressure on Russia.

It occurred as a plan to expedite UK penalties against Putin’s supporters sailed through the House of Commons on Monday, backed by all parties. The UK government claims that its Economic Crime Bill will make it much harder for affluent Russians to use the City of London for money laundering.
