To mark the 21st anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks, NASA took to Twitter on Sunday to share a photo taken from space by one of its astronauts of New York City after hijacked planes crashed into the city’s iconic twin towers. The image, captured by Astronaut Frank Culbertson, showed massive plumes of smoke rising from Manhattan shortly after the two planes collided with the buildings.
In a social media message, the US space agency paid tribute to the victims and heroes of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the 21st anniversary of that horrible day. The organisation added in a separate release that “each year, we pause and never forget” the events of September 11, 2001, which caused a catastrophic loss of life and profound changes in American culture.

NASA also shared the words of astronaut Frank Culbertson, who was the only American aboard the International Space Station (ISS) at the time of the attacks. He claimed that the smoke he captured on camera had a “odd bloom.”
In response to a recent news story, Mr. Culbertson remarked, “I suppose we were staring at New York around the time of, or shortly after, the collapse of the second tower.”
From such a lovely vantage point, he said, “it’s terrible to see smoke gushing from wounds in your own land.” It “jolts the brain” to be on a spacecraft designed to improve Earth life while also seeing life being destroyed by such intentional, awful crimes, regardless of who you are.
Planes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, DC, and a field in Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001. The terror attacks killed nearly 3,000 people and injured thousands more.
Joe Biden, the vice president of the United States, laid a wreath at the Pentagon on Sunday to commemorate the 21st anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The sombre ceremony was done in the pouring rain.
In a speech delivered outside the Pentagon, Vice President Biden claimed that the attackers wished to damage the nation’s character, which he described as one of sacrifice and compassion, kindness and grace, and strength and resiliency.
