Israeli Airstrike On Damascus Airport Results In Deaths Of 5 Syrian Soldiers: Report

Early on Saturday, the ministry of defence reported that an attack by Israel on locations south of the capital, including the Damascus International Airport, resulted in the deaths of five soldiers and material damage.

According to a statement from the ministry, Syrian air defences intercepted the strike and were able to shoot down the majority of the missiles.

If the strike had an impact on airport operations, it was not immediately clear.

Israeli bombings on Syrian airports have escalated, according to diplomatic and intelligence sources in the region, in an effort to prevent Tehran’s growing use of aerial supply lines to deliver weaponry to allies in Syria and Lebanon, particularly Hezbollah.

After ground transfers were hampered, Tehran turned to air transport as a more dependable way to deliver military supplies to its soldiers and those of its allies in Syria.
