A mob of factory workers and others killed a Sri Lankan factory export manager and set his body on fire in Sialkot, leading to the arrest of up to 100 persons.

According to Samaa TV, the police organised ten teams to find and apprehend those responsible for the lynching of the Sri Lankan national.

Hasaan Khawar, a spokeswoman for the Punjab administration, told journalists that more than 100 persons have been arrested in connection with the mob lynching so far. According to Samaa TV, some of the suspects were identified using CCTV footage.

According to Samaa TV, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan condemned the incident, calling it a “day of disgrace” for the country and vowing to arrest all those involved.

Sri Lanka’s foreign ministry has sought an investigation, while Amnesty International has emphasised the importance of an impartial probe. The aforementioned incidence occurred on Wazirabad Road.

According to the Dawn newspaper, private factory workers attacked and killed a factory’s export manager, then burned his body.

Several videos circulating on the internet showed a large crowd of males assembled at the location. In several of the films, people can be heard chanting “Labbaik Ya Rasool Allah” chants.

This comes as the rising number of instances of blasphemy in Pakistan continues to worry human rights activists.

According to multiple reports by rights organisations, Pakistan has registered hundreds of blasphemy charges, the most of which are against religious minorities such as Hindus, Christians, Shia, and Ahmadiya Muslims, from 1987 to now.

In Pakistan, a huge number of blasphemy cases are currently pending.
