Officials reported Tuesday that an off-duty Los Angeles Police Department officer was fatally shot during an attempted robbery while house browsing with his fiancée.
According to LAPD Chief Michel Moore, Officer Fernando Arroyos, 27, and his fiancée were crossing a roadway in the South LA region at 9:15 p.m. on Monday when they were approached by a truck with three men who attempted to rob them.
“They got out of the car and confronted our officer,” Moore explained, “and it appears that the goal was an attempted robbery.” “According to the information we have thus far, one of the suspects pulled out a weapon. ” The cop yelled at his girlfriend, “Leave, leave… get back to the car.”
Arroyos was shot during the altercation in the 8700 block of Beach Street in an unincorporated area of LA County, according to LA County Sheriff’s officials.
When deputies got on the scene, they discovered an off-duty cop laying in an alleyway with at least one gunshot wound.
He was taken to St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood by deputies, where he died as a result of his injuries.
The suspects departed in a black pickup truck in an unidentified direction.
Three males and two women have been arrested in connection with the incident, according to sheriff’s officials. As of Tuesday afternoon, their names had not been revealed, and no charges had been filed.
Moore stated that two firearms were retrieved from the crime site.
According to sheriff’s officials, a second man was located with a gunshot wound just a few miles from where the off-duty officer was attacked. The individual, who has not been recognised, was brought to a local hospital for treatment. Investigators are still attempting to determine out if that person had anything to do with Arroyos’ death.
The officer’s body was transported from St. Francis Medical Center to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office early Tuesday morning, escorted by police cars.
“Our hearts break at this tragic loss for our police department and our city,” said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti on Twitter on Tuesday. I’m mourning with the rest of Los Angeles today, and I’m sending my condolences to his family.”
Arroyos was a three-year veteran of the force, and his mother and stepfather survive him. Moore stated that he was an only child.
Moore stated, “He had a brilliant future… that was taken away viciously over a street robbery.”
