Elon Musk expressed his thoughts on Netflix just hours after the streaming platform’s value dropped by over 25%.
“The awakened mind virus is making Netflix unwatchable,” the Tesla CEO wrote in response to a report claiming that Netflix’s subscription numbers had plummeted for the first time in ten years.
Musk was apparently referring to the OTT giant’s recent backlash for programming that was deemed restrictive in multiple ways. Last year, for example, Netflix was chastised for Dave Chappelle’s stand-up special The Closer, which was widely regarded as transphobic.
This isn’t the first time Elon Musk has equated being woke to a virus.
The tech billionaire had previously warned that “awakeness” is the “greatest menace to civilisation.” Musk claimed that political correctness is one of the greatest threats to society in an interview with the parody website Babylon Bee. He slammed attempts to cancel Dave Chappelle in particular, as well as the “woke agenda” and “cancel culture.”
Meanwhile, Netflix’s stock has plummeted after the company reported less-than-stellar quarterly earnings. The OTT platform had 221.6 million subscribers at the end of the first quarter of 2022, a modest decrease from the previous quarter. In an earnings letter, the platform claimed, “We aren’t expanding revenue as quickly as we’d like.”
