Elon Musk says he would buy Coca-Cola next "to put the cocaine back in "

After shaking up one of the world’s most popular social media networks and snagging Twitter for $44 billion in a weird hostile takeover on Monday, billionaire Tesla founder Elon Musk has chosen a new target: Coca-Cola.

In yet another wacky tweet, newfound Twitter owner Musk stated today that he planned to buy Coca-Cola next “to put the cocaine back in.”

Soon after, Musk uploaded a screenshot of a prior tweet in which he claimed, “Now I’m going to buy McDonald’s and fix all the ice cream machines,” then jokingly answered to himself, “Listen, I can’t do miracles, okay.”

Musk’s reputation on Twitter precedes him – even before he purchased the company. Musk had previously surveyed Twitter followers, asking if he should sell 10% of his Tesla stock to pay for unrealized capital gains, after which he sold over $7 billion in Tesla shares after more than 57 percent of poll participants voted in favour of his plan.

In the weeks leading up to his Twitter takeover, Musk tweeted a series of ideas that he thought could improve the platform, some of which appeared serious, such as the possibility of introducing an edit button, while others seemed completely bizarre, such as turning Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters into a homeless shelter.

His most recent Coca-Cola tweet, presumably in jest but not entirely discernible given his history of acting on his whimsical social media pronouncements, is an homage to the veteran beverage company’s colourful past with cocaine. Coca-namesake Cola’s signature soft drink is called for its two main ingredients: coca leaves and kola nuts. While kola nuts contain caffeine, coca leaves are the source of the psychoactive substance cocaine.

Cocaine-laced coca leaves were once a key element in the formula for the carbonated soft drink back in the nineteenth century, when the chemical was still considered medicinal. However, as the drug became stigmatised and Prohibition was implemented in the United States, cocaine was removed from Coca-secret Cola’s formula and replaced with decocainised coca leaves.
